The Audiology Clinic has a purpose built, well equipped testing room and the school employs a specialist audiologist.


  • Follow Modernising Children’s Hearing Aid Services (MCHAS) guidelines and protocol
  • Encourage children and young people with residual hearing to use their listening devices
  • Ensure that the quality of the children and young people listening devices are at their maximum settings and working well
  • Ensuring optimum listening potential
  • Daily listening checks from Form Tutors
  • Weekly Hearing Aid/Cochlear Implant checks by Audiology Team
  • Test box hearing aids every term

Assessments & monitoring

  • Perform Otoscopy for assessments or where there are concerns of outer ear pathologies
  • Perform Tympanometry for assessments or where there are concerns of middle ear pathologies
  • Assess and monitor children and young people with injury to their Cochlear Implant site following the British Cochlear Implant Group (BCIG) protocol
  • Perform hearing assessments yearly as well as when required by Staff / Parents / Carers / Local Audiology
  • Appropriate testing including Visual Reinforcement Audiology (VRA), Play Audiometry, Pure Tone Audiometry & McCormick Toy Test
  • Wax removal where needed


  • Provide high quality ear moulds where needed and promptly issue the moulds on receipt.
  • Repair Hearing devices in house and where possible replace existing faulty equipment
  • Loan Cochlear/Hearing aid RSDD equipment while waiting for ordered items from the children and young people's Local Audiology Team.

Audiology in the classroom

  • Provide information, advice and guidance to teachers of children and young people with Hearing Impairment.
  • Classroom support for children, teachers and education assistants.
  • Audiological advice and support for the management of personal hearing aids, Radio Aids, Cochlear Implants, Soundfield Systems.
  • Support for transitions between Key Stages i.e. from Primary to Secondary & Post 16.
  • Support Language acquisition and development for English and BSL.

Sharing information

  • Multi-agency liaison of information.
  • Updates and training for governors & staff.
  • Accessible information on Staff Shared IT system.
  • Contributing to the process of Statutory Assessment.
  • Liaise with Speech & Language Therapists, Health Centre Lead, parents / carers and Local Children’s Hearing Services.

Children and young people

  • Ensure children and young people can take appropriate responsibility for their listening device.
  • Ensure where possible children and young people know how to use their listening device.
  • Explanation of the students hearing loss/ degree of hearing loss
  • Where appropriate ensuring children and young people know how to read their Audiogram
  • Transition young people smoothly from child to adult services and give them the appropriate information required
